Let us know what you find about water catchment. I've look into building my own cistern. Everything I read tells you to water proof the inside and most of the products look questionable for safe drinking water. I've lived overseas as a child in countries that I don't believe use water proofing. If anyone knows how it is done or knows a website let me know.

You didn't say if you live in the city or rural. If you have contact with farmers or farmers markets or hunters or if you have wild animals wild plants around that you could use in an emergency situation. Find a book at the library that could help you identify plants and animals in your area, read up on how to put up extra produce. There is alot you can learn about food you can find that will help you when you need it. Good luck it can be overwhelming but it impowers you the more you learn.

It is never to late to be ready if anything happens. Many things can be done that cost little to no money. Use the backdoorsurvival site for information too. A bag or backpack you already have can be filled with items you may need. Then if anything happens grab it and go. :-)

It is never too late. Over on my Backdoor Survival site (www.backdoorsurvival.com) you will find lots of tips for prepping beginners. A good place to start is with the "Getting Prepared By Month" series which you can access from the menu bar.

Check it out and if you have any questions, let me know. BTW, I love New Zealand - I was there for a month in 2006.

Good to see G3's info from EMT perspective. My thought is if one is going to dabble at all in self care, there are two books to look for: a Merck Manual and a Physician's Desk Reference (PDR). I use an older Merck that I had in college as a Physiology major and I picked up a one-year-old PDR for about 1/20th the cost at the Fort Hood thrift store, when Darnall Community Hospital dumped the old versions for next year's volume. Between the two, I can make an informed decision to load-and-go or stay-and-play as G3 puts it.
